Exploring a Unique Dimension with Cute Girls in Yokohama: An Interview with Concept Cafe NAVY2

In Yokohama, Kanagawa, Concept Cafe NAVY2 offers an otherworldly experience as soon as you step inside. The cafe’s interior is themed around the near future and outer space, featuring "maidroid" (maid and android) staff who are adorable robot girls. It’s a place where you can enjoy a fun time with these unique characters. The cafe welcomes international tourists, so foreign visitors can come without any concerns.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Shimizu, the manager of this fantastic concept cafe. Here’s a look into the cafe's charm and a message for foreign visitors.

Q1: How long has the cafe been open?

The cafe has been open for about three and a half years.

Q2: What’s the origin of the name "NAVY2"?

About 20 years ago, there was a cafe with the same name, and we inherited the name from that establishment.

Q3: Is the cafe similar to a girls' bar?

We incorporate elements from maid cafes, girls' bars, and clubs, but each concept cafe is unique. At NAVY2, our concept is "space and the future," we want the customers to enjoy the ambiance of being in a spaceship.

Q4: How do you decide on the cute outfits for the staff?

I select the outfits, but I also consider the opinions of the staff and the girls when deciding on designs. The outfits are custom-made.

Q5: Is the cafe especially busy on weekends?

Yes, Friday nights are particularly busy, but weekends are also quite lively.

Q6: How many staff members work at the cafe?

On weekdays, we have about 10 to 15 staff members, and on weekends, around 20 to 25.

Q7: Can guests enjoy karaoke and other activities with the staff?

Yes, guests can enjoy not only drinks but also darts, karaoke, and various other games.

Q8: What is the average spending per guest?

On average, guests spend around 10,000 JPY per visit.

Q9: Are there many foreign tourists?

We have been welcoming foreign guests since our opening. However, since we opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, initial demand was low. After the pandemic, the number of foreign visitors gradually increased. Although they are not the majority of our clientele we often have 2 to 3 groups of foreign guests, particularly on weekends. Our guests come from a wide range of countries, including China, South Korea, and even Mexico.

Q10: How do you handle multilingual support?

Most of our staff, including myself, do not speak English fluently. However, we use translation devices like PockeTalk to communicate with foreign guests and ensure they have a good time.

Q11: Are there any memorable experiences with foreign guests?

While not overly dramatic, we had a guest from Singapore who resonated with our cafe’s concept and expressed interest in opening a similar cafe in Singapore. It was very gratifying to hear.

Q12: Do you receive any thank you notes from foreign guests?

We don’t receive many thank you notes, but guests generally leave with smiles and seem to have enjoyed their time.

Q13: Is there anything you’d like foreign guests to be aware of?

Our system can be a bit challenging to explain. NAVY2 is themed around space and the future, with the girls portrayed as maidroids (robot maids). For example, our charge system involves different rates depending on the time, with the first charge being 2,000 JPY. Drinks are provided by the maidroids who stay with you. Understanding this system can help guests enjoy the experience fully. Also, please note that our staff do not sit next to guests.

Q14: What do you focus on as a manager?

I emphasize staff training, especially on basic etiquette like greetings. We also focus on maintaining a positive, energetic atmosphere to distinguish ourselves from other places.

Q15: Are there any special benefits for readers of Pleasure in Japan?

Yes, we offer a free initial charge for those who mention they saw us in Pleasure in Japan. Just order one drink or food item after that.

Q16: Any messages for foreign visitors?

NAVY2 offers a truly unique space with blue lighting that makes you feel like you are in a real spaceship. You can enjoy darts and games, including globally popular ones like Mario Kart, which transcend language barriers. We have had great interactions with international guests through games and it always makes the mood fun and lively. Please visit us while keeping in mind our house rules for a pleasant experience for both yourself and our staff. Our establishment ensures a fun and safe environment.
